Exhibition Text
"Night Window" was created to show the viewer how important little details are, just like a window on a rainy night. How many things we take for granted that are essential for our lives.
Meaning
"Night Window" was created to show the viewer a close up look at a rainy night on a window. How many little things exists that we take for granted and we don't usually think they are important when in reality they are essential for our lives. The colors show the excitement and love for the scenery, but also the sorrow and pain I feel when I realize how many people don't take a minute to look at the details.
Experimentation
I had previously used acrylic on canvas, but never this freely and abstract. I decided to experiment with the colors that I would use for the final piece. I was certainly going to use white and black because they compliment each other, now I had to choose two more colors. I researched on what some colors meant, but then I wanted to pick the colors without any bias on what they potentially mean. Afterwards, I picked green and blue because those are two colors that we see everyday in nature.
Another experimentation was blending the colors together. Blending has to be done fast when using acrylics, and that was what I experimented the most, how slow or fast each color had to be to blend.

Process
1. Finding Inspiration
I had previously decided that I wanted to create a painting using acrylic paint, now I just needed to research and find some inspiration. As I began to research artist with minimalism and colors I came across Pat Lipsky. Lipsky is an American artist that creates paintings and prints, with the use of minimalism she created "Laughing eye" which was the piece that inspired me the most. My goal for this piece was to should emotion through the use of color and how easily it is to accomplish this emotion by using minimalism.
2. Creating sketches
The sketches for these piece were more of the use of color, rather than the position of the color. I began to sketch the figure of the canvas, making it a square would mean that there was a balance in the frame and the emphasis would be placed upon the paint. Then the colors I picked were bright and noticeable contrasting a dark background to show the solution in the trouble.

3. Creating the canvas
In order to paint I needed to create a canvas. For this I used four frames and stapled them together to make the frame. Once the frame was strong I used some canvas fabric o cover the frame, which I also stapled to the back of the frame to make the fabric secure, I cut off the extra fabric and I created the canvas. The next step of this was to gesso the canvas, for this I took some gesso and applied 2-3 evenly coats to the entire canvas. I let it dry over night.

4. Painting
I wished to paint as the rhythm of my emotions, thus I did not sketch in the canvas. I first painted the whole canvas black because I had previously decided it would be the best choice. Then I took three colors, white, green and light blue. These hues were the colors for the piece which at some point would enhance each other and blend evenly. I first used white and painted some lines, then I repeated this with the other colors two more times, I also went with black to blend the colors together.

Artist Inspiration
Laughing Eye
1970 |
The inspiration of this piece is called "Laughing eye" by Pat Lipsky, she focused on abstract art with minimalism, this is what inspired me the most.
These artworks focus on something of our daily loves and makes a zoon in an abstract way, using many colors and different textures. Allowing her own emotions to show through the colors and the sizes of the brushstrokes. When comparing "Night Window" to these two pieces there are many similarities. "Night Window" was created to symbolize and emphasize the importance of time and calmness, as well as "Laughing Eye" and "Sun Ray"; these pieces share a variety of hues that are abstract, but create an image that is somewhat close to reality. |

Reflection
Overall I "Night Window" is a success because it exhibits colors and uses minimalism to show a daily object in our lives and its emotion in colors and texture. Some failures with this piece were that it does not use vibrant colors as I had first desired, however it enhances more the usage on blending and making it one. The meaning is exhibited through the colors and the thickness of the brushstrokes, by being open to interpretation this piece shows new ways to perceive the world around us.
ACT Questions
1. Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
"Night Window" was inspired by "Laughing eye" and "Sun Ray" by Pat Lipsky due to the vibrant hues and the significance of the meaning.
2. What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The author of my research talks about the colors used by Lipsky to show her views on daily tasks or objects that she finds, she uses brushstrokes to represent her feelings and the hues to show that there is more than what it seems.
3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Throughout my research I found that we often don't stop and wait to appreciate all that we have, we don't see how much we have and we never appreciate it until we need it.
4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The theme that I focused on was emotions on my research, how lines and colors affect the emotions given by the artist tot he viewer.
5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
The inferences that I made while doing my research were that there are many artist who use a variety of colors, but here are little that can say a lot by using minimalism, yet Lipsky is able to do this.
